Letter from Superintendent/Principal

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We had a great first week back to school. There were a few mishaps with the scheduling, but that is always the case at the start of the year. Things always seem to work out well on paper. Then, we put it into practice and it doesn’t work so well. Luckily, the students and staff are flexible.

The messages home regarding unexcused absences seem to be working well. When parents get a phone call or text message saying their child is marked absent, they have been calling in. This is especially good when parents know they sent their child to school and then they are marked absent. These calls help with absences, but also help with keeping the students safe and knowing where they are at all times.

Did you know that Floodwood School was validated at a Minnesota School of Excellence by the Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association? We are so proud of this accomplishment. The teachers and support staff have put in much time and effort to make this happen. Stay tuned for more details on a huge celebration that all of the community will be invited to attend.

As you may have heard, the school district will be seeking an Operating Referendum during the November election. We will be having meetings to share details of why we will be asking the voters to vote yes in November.  The dates of the meetings will be determined at the Working Session of the School Board on Monday, September 10th. In the meantime, I would like to assure you that we are not asking for more money to buy extras, increase programming, or hire more staff. We are asking for more money to maintain the programming and staff we had during the 2017-2018 school year. As you know, due to our need to decrease the amount of money we were going to deficit spend for the 2018-2019 school year, we were forced to reduce staff.

Students in K-6 will begin assessments to determine who will need additional support in reading and math. We will also be assessing the high school students this year. We have made tremendous growth in our elementary program through interventions. We are implementing similar support in our high school. Although it will not look exactly like elementary interventions, we are confident we will have the same impact.

Do you have our school app on your phone or tablet? Go to the app store and search for Floodwood School. You will have access to the events and happenings of the school. Do you have the Infinite Campus app on your phone or tablet? This will give you access to up-to-date information on your child including attendance, missing assignments, and grades.

Sincerely,

Dr. Rae Villebrun
