Kindergarten students recently created a huge map of our Floodwood community! This project had students apply character traits they are learning about in class: Making Improvements, Persevering through Challenges, Thinking Creatively, and Cooperating with Others. Our map is a work in progress, but we couldn’t be more proud of this initial phase. Way to go, Kinder Crew!

Early Childhood / Preschool Screening: October 9th, 2020 & March 5th, 2021 (no regular preschool classes on those days) Early Childhood Screening is required before a student starts kindergarten in Minnesota. The screening is a quick and simple check of how your child is doing at 3 to 4 years of age. It identifies, at an early stage, possible health or learning concerns, so that children can get help before starting school. It is not a readiness test for kindergarten. Early childhood screening helps a parent find out how their child is doing, helps connect families to early childhood programs and other community services, and is a time to ask about parenting issues and/or concerns. If your child has been screened through a Special Education evaluation, they do not have to be screened again. Frequently Asked Questions about Screening: What happens during a screening? During the Early Childhood Screening, well qualified staff, licensed teachers, and school nurses will check your child's vision, hearing, growth, immunization status, and overall development (skills in thinking, communication and language, large and small muscles, and social/emotional development.) Should I wait until my child is ready to enter kindergarten? No- the earlier the better. Waiting until a child is in school or ready to enter school may be waiting too long. If your child is 3 years old and has not been checked for health and developmental status, call (218) 476-2285 ext. 70106 for information on how to get your child screened. When are the screenings held? Floodwood Early Childhood Screenings are held 2 times during the school year. This year it is October 9th and March 5th. There is no regular preschool class on those days. Is there a cost? There is no charge, however appointment times are needed.

Dear Parents and Guardians: The recent numbers from Greater St. Louis County have increased to 13.74. The number for our area is still reporting 1 to 5 cases in assisted living and nursing homes. For this reason, we will continue providing educational services as we have been. To clarify how we use the data from St. Louis County to make the decision to move into a different learning model: The number for Greater St. Louis County is 10.0 or more The number for our area is 10.0 or more Where are the numbers coming from (a nursing home) How do the cases impact the school Using these steps to make our decision looks like this: Greater St. Louis County-13.74 Our area has 1-5 cases Numbers are from an assisted living/nursing home The cases do not impact the school in a significant way Our students have accepted wearing masks with little to no complaints. Everyone, including staff, are still getting used to the one way traffic in the hallway. The biggest complaint from students comes from being close to a classroom, but having to go around. The reason for the one way traffic in the high school hallway is because this is where the students come in close contact with one another every hour. If we limit the amount of face to face interaction that comes from meeting one another in the hallway, we are keeping the kids safe. The teachers have been taking the students outside as much as makes sense. Sometimes they are outside for brain breaks and sometimes they are outside to do their lessons. It is an opportunity for students to take their masks off while they are learning. We would like to thank families for being aware of the symptoms and keeping children home when they don’t feel well. We also appreciate keeping us informed. Together, we will keep everyone as safe and healthy as we can. Here is some additional information for you from the Minnesota Department of Health: COVID Guide for Attendance at School - https://5il.co/l50y If you have questions or concerns, please let me know. Sincerely, Dr. Rae Villebrun Superintendent/Principal Floodwood School: Preparing all students to succeed.
